Myanmar refugees flood into border city
MORE than 60,000 refugees have poured into a Chinese city on the Myanmar border since the outbreak of a conflict in the southeast Asian nation, a senior official said yesterday.
Authorities in the city of Lincang have provided the displaced people with basic supplies and medical services, said Li Jiheng, Party chief of southwest China’s Yunnan Province.
Strict border management measures have been carried out, but the border has not closed, he said.
China’s Foreign Ministry has said the Kokang conflict in Myanmar is an internal affair.
No evidence has pointed to any involvement by the Chinese government.
China and Myanmar are friendly neighbors and China always respects Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, Li said.
