Myanmar warned over stray fire
CHINA’S military will take “firm and decisive action” if any more stray fire incidents should happen near its border with Myanmar, a senior official said yesterday.
Fan Changlong, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks while speaking over the telephone with Min Aung Hlaing, commander-in-chief of the Myanmar Defense Services. He was speaking in response to an incident on Friday when a bomb dropped by a Myanmar warplane killed four Chinese people in southwest China’s Yunnan Province.
Fan called on Myanmar to seriously investigate the incident and urged it to severely punish the perpetrators, as well as apologize to and compensate the families of the victims.
Myanmar’s warplanes have on several occasions crossed the China-Myanmar border and stray fire has caused casualties and loss of property of the Chinese people, he said.
Min Aung Hlaing said Myanmar understands China’s feelings and said it will send teams to jointly investigate the incident with Chinese officials.
He also promised to properly handle relevant issues and hold the perpetrators accountable, adding that Myanmar’s military will advance friendly cooperation with the Chinese army.
A Chinese military spokesman said earlier that in the wake of the deadly incident China has sent fighter jets to patrol its border with Myanmar.
The bomb hit a sugarcane field in the city of Lincang, killing four workers and injuring nine others.
The incident came just days after China warned of escalating violence near the border following a surge in ethnic conflict in the remote Kokang region in Myanmar’s northeastern Shan state.
The People’s Liberation Army Air Force dispatched several fighter jets on Friday to “track, monitor, warn and chase away” Myanmar military planes flying close to the Chinese border, said spokesman Shen Jinke.
The air force is on high alert, and is keeping a close watch on the situation and has strengthened surveillance of the border, he said.
Earlier in the week, China’s foreign ministry said that stray fire from a fight on Sunday between Myanmar’s government forces and a local ethnic army had damaged a house in China.
