Myanmar's quake death toll rises to 65
THE death toll of Myanmar's yesterday earthquake has risen to 65 with 111 injured so far, official sources said this afternoon.
The victims were 29 from Monglin, 22 from Kyatkuni, 11 from Tarlay and 3 from Tachileik.
A total of 390 residential houses, 14 monasteries and 9 government department buildings were destroyed in the mainly affected areas of Tarlay, Naryaung and Monglin. Of them, the most number of houses were spoiled in Monglin with 128.
The authorities did not mention the casualties and damages in Kengtung which was less affected.
Relief measures are being taken by the state and local authorities with rescue teams rushing to the scene, the report added.
A strong earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale jolted Loimwe, 56 km southeast of Kengtung in northeastern Myanmar last night at 20:29 pm local time (1369 GMT).
The quake's epicenter was about 10 km underground and in the hills of Myanmar bordering Thailand and Laos.
The quake was followed by six after-shocks until this morning.
