N. Korean held on spy charges

A NORTH Korean woman accused of eliciting sensitive information from South Korean men she met on Internet chat rooms has been arrested, a news report said yesterday.

The 36-year-old, who had entered South Korea by posing as a defector, allegedly passed information on Seoul subways and the names of South Korean police officers and government officials to Pyongyang's intelligence authorities, the Yonhap news agency reported.

The woman, surnamed Kim, is said to have met a former Seoul subway official online when she lived in China's Hunan province, Yonhap reported. She had lived in Hunan from 2006 until she entered South Korea in 2009.

The 52-year-old former subway official, surnamed Oh, allegedly passed Kim documents about emergency procedures, Yonhap reported. The pair lived together in China after becoming romantically involved, the agency said.

The woman also allegedly got lists of names of police officers and officials from a South Korean man who worked for a travel agency.
