New Russian wildfires burn 60 buildings
A new wave of Russian wildfires killed one person and destroyed at least 60 buildings yesterday, as strong winds fanned flames in the Volgograd region, parched by its worst drought on record.
Wildfires destroyed thousands of homes and killed at least 54 people in Russia's agricultural heartland in August after the worst heatwave since records began destroyed crops covering an area the size of Portugal.
Fires yesterday destroyed at least 60 buildings, many of them residential, in four separate districts of Volgograd region, local Emergencies Ministry spokeswoman Yelena Rodionova said.
One man was killed when a fire in a forest spread to his house. Winds gusted up to 25 metres per second in temperatures that approached 40 degrees Celsius, she said.
