New probe into kidnap quashes theories
A MAJOR new investigation involving the FBI into the infamous eight-year kidnap ordeal of Austrian girl Natascha Kampusch debunks several outlandish but persistent conspiracy theories, newspapers said yesterday.
The probe, commissioned by Austria's parliament and compiled over nine months with help from US and German experts, and due to be published today, concludes that Wolfgang Priklopil in all likelihood acted alone when he kidnapped 10-year-old Kampusch in 1998.
The unemployed telecoms engineer kept Kampusch prisoner in a specially made dungeon near Vienna until she managed to escape in 2006, making headlines worldwide. Priklopil killed himself the same day.
"Although the involvement of others in the kidnap cannot be completely ruled out, there is no objective proof this was the case and no leads could be found," the Kurier daily cited a draft of the report as saying.
Theories that Priklopil had accomplices, and even that he was part of a child pornography ring involving senior officials, were sparked by a schoolgirl saying that she had seen Kampusch bundled into a van by two men, as well as by other claims.
The schoolgirl later withdrew her claim entirely, the Kurier said.
