Nigerian raid on terrorists kills hostage

NIGERIA'S military says it didn't know a German hostage was inside a house it raided in the country's Muslim north, an operation that saw the man killed.

The raid happened yesterday morning in the city of Kano. A statement from the military issued late yesterday said soldiers raided the house after receiving a tip that there was a "meeting of senior commanders of the terrorist element."

The military said it killed five suspected terrorists and later found the handcuffed dead body of Edgar Fritz Raupach, an engineer working for a construction company who was kidnapped in January. A group claiming to be al-Qaida's north African wing said in March it was holding him and demanded the release of a Muslim woman imprisoned in Germany in exchange for freeing him.

Kidnapping of foreigners has become a common tactic of al-Qaida's north African wing, al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb.
