A SECOND explosion today in the New Zealand South Island Pike River coal mine destroyed hopes of finding any survivors.

Families of 29 miners trapped underground have been told there is no hope any survivors will emerge from the mine after the second explosion at 2:37 pm this afternoon, Radio New Zealand reported.
