Norwegian police take killer on tour of death isle

RESTRAINED by a police harness, the Norwegian man who confessed to killing 69 people at an island youth camp reconstructed his actions for police in a day-long trip back to the crime scene.

Police said yesterday they took Anders Behring Breivik back to the island of Utoya on Saturday as part of the investigation into the July 22 attacks, when Breivik shot people on the lake island near Oslo after killing eight people in the capital with a bomb.

Prosecutor Paal-Fredrik Hjort Kraby said the 32-year-old described the killings in detail during an eight-hour tour of the island with up to a dozen police.

The tour took place amid a huge security operation to prevent any escape attempt and protect Breivik against a revenge attack. He walked roughly the same route he took during the shooting spree and, according to Hjort Kraby, explained what happened with little interference from police.

The entire event was filmed by police and may later be used in court, he added.

Video images of the reconstruction published by a Norwegian newspaper show Breivik arriving at Utoya on the same ferry he used to reach the island last month. He wore a bulletproof vest and a harness connected to a leash over a red T-shirt and jeans as he casually led police around the island.

The heavy-built killer is seen pointing out locations along the way and simulating shots into the water, where panicked teenagers had tried to escape from him.

Hjort Kraby said: "The suspect showed he was not emotionally unaffected by being back at Utoya 鈥 but did not show any remorse. He has been questioned for around 50 hours about this, and he has always been calm, detailed and collaborative."

The tour was arranged to avoid the need for a reconstruction during the trial, Hjort Kraby said.

The prosecutor also confirmed reports that police received several phone calls during the attack that were probably from Breivik himself, but would not say how police had reacted to the calls. According to a Norwegian newspaper, Breivik offered to surrender several times and asked police to call him back, but they did not.
