Obama scoffs at Trump鈥檚 chances

US President Barack Obama is fairly certain of one thing when it comes to next year鈥檚 election: Donald Trump won鈥檛 succeed him in the White House.

The billionaire businessman, the frontrunner in the race to become the Republican party鈥檚 White House nominee, has raised hackles with his controversial comments on immigration, gun control and women, among other issues.

鈥淗e knows how to get attention. He is, you know, the classic reality TV character, and at this early stage, it鈥檚 not surprising that he鈥檚 gotten a lot of attention,鈥 Obama said of Trump in an interview on CBS television鈥檚 鈥60 Minutes鈥 news program.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think he鈥檒l end up being president of the United States,鈥 Obama said in the interview, which aired on Sunday.

Incendiary comments

Trump鈥檚 incendiary comments on immigration and other issues have dominated the campaign and offended many Americans, but he nevertheless has seen his poll numbers climb steadily higher.

During a speech to Latino political leaders last week, Obama condemned the logic of 鈥渟aying clearly inflammatory things and then saying, 鈥榃ell that鈥檚 not what I meant鈥 鈥 until you do it again and again鈥.

鈥淟eadership is not fanning the flames of intolerance, and then acting all surprised when a fire breaks out,鈥 he added.

Obama did not name Trump directly during that speech, instead denouncing the overall tone of the Republican presidential field. In his 鈥60 Minutes鈥 interview, the Democratic president pointed to 鈥済enuine anti-immigrant sentiment in a large portion of at least Republican primary voters鈥, although he stressed it was not 鈥渦niform鈥.

Obama said he had a 鈥渂ittersweet鈥 feeling about the 15 months he has left in the White House.

鈥淥n the one hand, I am very proud of what we鈥檝e accomplished and it makes me think, I鈥檇 love to do some more. But by the time I鈥檓 finished, it will be time for me to go.鈥
