Obama to make statement on jobs today

US President Barack Obama will make a statement today at 11 a.m. EDT (1500 GMT) about April jobs data that will be released earlier that day, the White House said yesterday.

Obama has made job creation his top priority in the 2010 congressional election year but other events, including the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the attempted bombing in New York's Times Square, have at times overshadowed the White House's message.

Obama will be joined by his top economic advisers including Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Christina Romer, head of the Council of Economic Advisers.

The number of US workers filing new applications for unemployment insurance fell slightly less than expected last week, government data showed on Thursday, implying a measured job market recovery.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 7,000 to a seasonally adjusted 444,000 in the week ended May 1, the Labor Department said.
