Obama to meet lawmakers on jobs today

US President Barack Obama will bring Democratic and Republican leaders of Congress to the White House today to promote his jobs proposals and will make a statement afterward.

The announcement yesterday came on the day Obama proposed small business tax cuts, energy efficiency rebates and other steps aimed at reducing the country's 10 percent jobless rate.

"As a follow up to his speech on the economy today, the president will hold a bipartisan meeting with members of Congress tomorrow to discuss the next steps for growing the economy and creating jobs," said White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

The meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. EST (1600 GMT).

The White House said 18 lawmakers were expected, including Democratic and Republican leaders of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Afterward, Obama will make a statement to news media at 11:50 am EST (1650 GMT).

As part of his economic efforts, Obama will meet executives from the financial sector next Monday to discuss ways to increase small business lending and efforts to reform financial regulations, the White House said earlier yesterday.
