Obama's daughter safe after Mexico earthquake: spokesperson
THE 13-year-old daughter of U S President Barack Obama is safe in Mexico following a strong earthquake there, a White House spokesperson said yesterday.
"In light of today's earthquake, we can confirm that Malia Obama is safe and was never in danger," said a spokeswoman for First Lady Michelle Obama.
Malia, Obama's elder daughter, is on spring break vacation with friends in Mexico.
Strong tremors were felt in Mexico City and prompted panicked residents to flee shaking buildings yesterday as a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake jolted Mexico's Pacific coast.
The quake, which struck at 12:02pm local time, had a depth of 20 km, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). So far there has been no report of casualties from the local authorities.
