‘Old friend’ to be next US ambassador
PRESIDENT-ELECT Donald Trump will nominate Iowa Governor Terry Branstad as the next US ambassador to China, a transition official confirmed yesterday.
China’s foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang called Branstad an “old friend” of China, but added that Beijing would work with any US ambassador.
“We welcome him to play a greater role in advancing the development of China-US relations,” he told reporters.
Branstad’s nomination suggests Trump may be ready to take a less combative stance toward China than many expected, according to trade experts and diplomats.
Branstad called Chinese President Xi Jinping a “long-time friend” when Xi visited Iowa in February 2012, only nine months before he became Chinese leader.
China is one of Iowa’s biggest export markets. During Xi’s trip, Chinese buyers said they would buy more than US$4 billion in US soybeans that year.
