Olympics, 'American Beauty' producers helm Oscars
A producer specializing in TV spectacles such as the Olympic Games and one of the Oscar-winning filmmakers behind "American Beauty" will run the Academy Awards telecast next year, organizers said yesterday.
Hollywood veterans Don Mischer and Bruce Cohen will produce the 83rd annual event airing on Feb. 27 from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre, with Mischer additionally serving as director.
The duo come aboard almost four months after the 2010 ceremony drew the most viewers in five years despite middling reviews.
It also marks a switch from the practice of the previous two years when a pair of producers worked alongside a director.
"I fell in love with the Oscars as an eight-year-old kid, the night my grandmothers let me stay up to watch for the first time," Cohen said in a statement.
"It is a dream come true for me to now be producing the show with the phenomenal Don Mischer ... We hope to create a show that celebrates what people around the world love about the Academy Awards year after year - the excitement, glamour and tradition of Oscar Night itself."
Cohen, along with Dan Jinks, won a best picture Oscar in 1999 as producer of the suburban drama "American Beauty." He and Jinks were nominated two years ago for the gay biopic "Milk."
Mischer's credits include the opening ceremonies of both the Winter and Summer Olympic Games, several Super Bowl half-time shows, and various music specials headlined by the likes of Barbra Streisand and Willie Nelson.
While this will be the first involvement with the Oscar telecast for both men, they collaborated on the Academy's inaugural Governors Awards event last November, when the dispensation of honorary Oscars was relegated to a dinner.
