One killed, 5 wounded in California mall gun battle

A woman was killed and five other men were wounded in a gun battle yesterday in Sacramento, California, authorities said.

The incident started just before 1 p.m. local time at a barber shop in a strip mall in south Sacramento, police Sgt. Norm Leong told reporters.

Two gunmen entered the shop and opened fire at two customers who were getting haircuts. The customers returned fire, he said.

Then the exchange of fire spilled into a parking lot, killing a woman who was loading her two-year-old child into a car seat. She was pronounced dead at the scene while the child was unhurt and has been placed under protection, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's office.

"We believe she (the woman) is a totally innocent victim," said Sgt. Tim Curran from the office.

Four of the five injured were hospitalized, including an unidentified man who was shot in the chest and has life-threatening injuries, he added. The fifth man, a 39-year-old, suffered a grazing wound.

"They are all being treated as victims. We do believe there's a high probability that those we are with are suspects," Curran said.

An investigation is underway to determine who initiated the shooting, authorities said.
