One killed, dozens missing in Colombia landslide

AT least one person was killed and dozens were reportedly missing following a landslide that buried some 50 houses in northwestern Colombia, local media reported yesterday.

One body has been recovered and some 40 to 50 people are believed missing by yesterday's landslide in the Medellin suburb of Bello, Antioquia state emergency management director John Rendon was quoted as saying.

Earlier reports said some 200 people may be buried by the landslide triggered by heavy rains in the region.

Rendon said sniffer dogs have arrived at the spot to try to locate people beneath the sodden earth.

Cesar Uruena, deputy director of Red Cross operations, said rescuers have recovered three people alive, adding further efforts are being made to find more survivors.

Uruena said up to 200 people may be missing, saying "The initial count is that there may be 150 to 200 people considered missing."

Landslides triggered by rains are common in the country's Andes mountains.
