Over 1,500 families displaced as tropical depression hits S. Philippines
Over 1,500 families fled their homes and hunkered down to evacuation centers as Tropical Depression Zoraida churned through southern Philippines today.
Zoraida dumped heavy rains and flooded three provinces.
Over 600 families or 3,000 people fled their homes in Compostela Valley province due to threats of heavy flooding in five of its 11 towns, said Camilo Cascolan, provincial police chief.
In nearby Davao Oriental province, about 900 families or over 4, 500 people, mostly in coastal areas, riverbanks and hillsides were evacuated to safe places as the tropical depression hit land around 11am, local police said.
There were also over 300 people who fled from floodwaters in Davao del Norte province, officials said.
A landslide caused by heavy rains also hit a mining village in Monkayo town, Compostela Valley this morning, but did not cause any casualties, said Raul Villocino, provincial disaster officer.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the storm, packing winds of up to 55 kilometers per hour, was moving northwestward at 30 kph.
