Over 350 inmates escape after prison break in E. Afghanistan

More than 350 inmates escaped at early hours of Monday after Taliban militants attacked a prison in Afghanistan's eastern province of Ghazni, said an official.

"One militant rammed a car bomb to the main gate of the prison at around 2:00 a.m. local time. Shortly after the blast six militants disguised in police uniform entered the jail, assisting the inmates to leave the complex," Mohammad Ali Ahmadi, deputy provincial governor, told Xinhua.

The initial information showed that 352 prisoners, including a number of criminal inmates, succeeded to flee while security forces had intercepted more than 80 prisoners, the official added.

"Four policemen of the jail were killed while 14 people, including four inmates and 10 security forces, were wounded by the attack," Ahmadi said, adding "a massive operation has started now to arrest the escapees."

Sediq Sediqqi, the country's Interior Ministry spokesman, said on his twitter account that an investigation was launched into the incident and details would be made public afterwards.

The Taliban militant group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Prison breaks had also occurred in Afghanistan in the past, including a jail break in southern Kandahar province when hundreds of Taliban inmates escaped in 2011.
