Palestinians seek seat on UN
THE Palestinians will ask the United Nations Security Council next week to accept their nation as a full member of the UN, the Palestinian foreign minister said yesterday, a move that defies a US threat to veto the bid for statehood.
The remarks by Palestinian government spokesman Riad Malki came ahead of the arrival in the West Bank of a US diplomatic team on a last-ditch mission to persuade the Palestinians to drop their UN bid.
With a diplomatic showdown looming, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced yesterday he would travel to the UN next week to lead opposition to the Palestinian initiative.
The issue threatens to derail US diplomacy by forcing Washington to veto a proposal whose outcome - a Palestinian state - is supported in principle by most of the world, including the White House.
However, both the US and Israel say a Palestinian state can be established only through negotiation.
It could also drag out at the UN. The process would first go before the Security Council before the Palestinians turn to the General Assembly. The process could go on for months.
Malki said Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will personally submit the Palestinian request for membership to UN Secretary--General Ban Ki-moon after addressing the General Assembly on September 23.
