Panda in Tokyo Ueno Zoo shows signs of pregnancy
A female giant panda at Tokyo's Ueno Zoo has showed signs of pregnancy, a zoo official said today.
The official said that data on the female panda, Shin Shin's condition, such as her hormone level and loss of appetite for about two weeks, have suggested she may be pregnant.
If the panda pair at the Ueno Zoo successfully give birth to a baby, it will be the first time the oldest zoo in Japan, since 1882, has succeeded in natural breeding of pandas.
Zoo officials have said that Ueno Zoo will suspend public viewings of the female panda from July 3 due to her symptoms and will observe her carefully.
The pair were leased from China in February last year.
