Passenger trains collide head-on in S Korea, 10 injured

TWO passenger trains collided head- on on Tuesday afternoon in the eastern region of South Korea, leaving some 10 people injured, local broadcaster YTN reported.

The trains collided at about 5:50 p.m. local time in the single- track between Taebaek Station and Mungok Station, located in Taebaek, the eastern Gangwon Province.

Around 10 passengers have been confirmed wounded until now, with five sustaining a heavy injury, the state-run rail operator KORAIL said.

Those injured were taken to a nearby hospital. Witnesses said some were bleeding heavily, adding that a terrific explosion sound was heard when the trains collided.

Some 100 passengers escaped from the crashed trains through their own efforts. A number of fire engines and rescuers were dispatched to the site.
