Patrick Kennedy set to wed at family's compound

PATRICK Kennedy, a member of one of America's most prominent political dynasties, plans to wed at the family compound this week, people close to the family said yesterday.

Kennedy, who spent 16 years representing Rhode Island in the US House of Representatives, will marry New Jersey school teacher Amy Petitgout in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, at the family's waterfront retreat.

This week he also celebrates his 44th birthday. It is his first marriage.

Two years ago his father, Edward Kennedy, a member of the US Senate for nearly 47 years, died of brain cancer. His uncles were President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert Kennedy, both of whom were assassinated.

The wedding will be officiated by Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer.

While in Congress, Kennedy sought help in 2006 for dependency on prescription drugs after crashing his car into a security barrier in Washington.

He opted not to seek re-election to Congress last year.

Kennedy has taken a two-year appointment as a visiting fellow at Brown University's Institute for Brain Science, where he deliver lectures and advocates for neurological research and mental health care.
