Peacekeepers safe, says UN
The United Nations said yesterday that no peacekeepers were killed when the fuel tanker exploded in eastern Congo, correcting an earlier statement saying that five of its soldiers had died.
"There are no UN blue helmets dead," Olamide Adedeji, the UN mission's head of public information, said.
Adedeji had previously said five peacekeepers were killed trying to help civilians caught up in the incident.
The local governor said more than 200 people were killed and 100 injured when a fuel tanker overturned and exploded in Congo's South Kivu province late on Friday.
