Philippine floods toll rises to 569

THE death toll from mammoth floods unleashed in the Philippines by tropical storm Washi has climbed to 569 with nearly 400 people reported as missing, the Red Cross said today.

The devastated port cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan accounted for 434 of the deaths, Gwendolyn Pang, secretary general of the Philippine National Red Cross, said in a statement, warning the numbers could climb further.

The number of people reported missing had also soared to 400, up from 160 earlier, Pang told AFP.

"The missing might be among the already dead. There are still many unclaimed bodies," she said.--AFP
