Philippine gov't asks for proper assistance in typhoon-hit areas

The Philippine government on Monday expressed gratitude to those who have been extending help for the areas devastated by super typhoon Haiyan (local codename Yolanda), but said they had better send the immediate assistance that the country needs.

Cabinet Secretary Jose Rene Almendras in a news briefing expressed the gratitude of the Philippine government. However, he also said that "what is more important for us right now is you give us the right kind of help."

"What do I mean by a right kind of help? Don't send us something that we cannot use immediately now. I mean, if you goanna send us construction material, please don't send it now yet. .. we need resources; we need relief operations, that means food, medicine," he explained.

Currently, most of the help that the government had received was more on cash, equipment and resources, he said.

Almendras assured that all the assistance that will reach the Aquino government will be fully accounted for.

Meanwhile, Philippines' presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda expressed hope that the number of casualties would be lower than the estimated 10,000.

He said that the official number of casualties is the one coming from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), which recorded the latest death toll at 255.

Local police earlier said that some 10,000 people were feared dead in central province of Leyte alone.
