Philippine police rescue 2 Chinese

PHILIPPINE police have rescued two Chinese nationals held hostage in the country's insurgent-infested southern jungles for more than three months, authorities said late yesterday.

In a terse report, Senior Superindent Bienvenido Latag said police and military joint operations rescued 27-year-old Chen Bozhong and 51-year-old Lv Zishun in a small village of southern Basilan province last night.

Latag said the freed hostages were brought to a hospital in the Basilan provincial capital for check-up. Police debriefing will start today.

Basilan Vice Governor Al Rasheed Sakalahul, meanwhile, told local media that the two appeared in good health except that Lv was limping a bit when he was rescued.

Sakalahul said kidnappers fled when they sensed the government troops closing- in at Binembangan village of Sumisip town. Security observers said the lack of encounter was a likely indication of ransom being paid.
