Philippines slum blaze

A HUGE night fire destroyed more than 1,000 homes in a slum neighborhood in the southern Philippines city of Davao, officials said yesterday.
Firefighters battled the flames for more than five hours in Isla Verde on Friday night. The blaze was brought under control shortly after 1am yesterday, but by then more than 5,000 people had been left homeless.
