Pirates kidnap Singapore crew in Malacca
THE crew of a Singaporean tug and barge have been kidnapped by pirates in the Strait of Malacca, a piracy reporting center said yesterday.
The incident occurred on Thursday, said Noel Choong, head of the International Maritime Bureau piracy reporting center in Kuala Lumpur. He would not disclose the nationality of the pirates or hostages.
"The pirates came up with guns, they attacked the ship and managed to board the ship and kidnapped two crew," Choong said.
The Strait of Malacca between Malaysia and Indonesia is among the world's busiest shipping lanes, used by more than 70,000 ships in 2007, including vessels supplying about 80 percent of oil to Japan and China.
