Poland's president to sign EU treaty Sunday

AN AIDE to Poland's president says he will sign the European Union reform treaty over the weekend.

Lech Kaczynski's signature will complete Poland's ratification of the Lisbon Treaty.

The head of the National Security Office Aleksander Szczyglo said Thursday that Kaczynski would sign it probably Sunday evening.

Ireland approved the treaty in a repeat vote Saturday and now only Kaczynski and Czech President Vaclav Klaus need to sign the document which seeks to boost the 27-nation bloc's clout by accelerating its decision-making through more majority voting.

It will take effect Jan. 1. Klaus says he is waiting for a ruling from the nation's Constitutional Court on a challenge from 17 senators questioning aspects of the charter.
