Police Explain Delay In Reaching Island
THE near-sinking of a police boat and a decision to wait for an armed unit from Oslo some 45 kilometers away were blamed for the delay in getting police to the island where 85 people were killed.
"When so many people and equipment was put into it, the boat started to take on water, so that the motor stopped," said Erik Berga, police chief in northern Buskerud County. "The boat was way too small and way too poor," he said, referring to a vessel brought to the scene to cross to Utoeya island.
The acting police chief in Oslo, Sveinung Sponheim, defended his special anti-terror unit's decision to drive to the scene. The nearest helicopter was too far away.
