'Polish Fritzl' goes on trial for raping daughter

THE trial of a Polish man accused of imprisoning and raping his daughter opened in northern Poland yesterday, a day after the eerily similar case of Josef Fritzl came to a close in Austria.
Prosecutors in the northeastern city of Bialystok read out the indictment yesterday morning against the suspect, identified only as Krzysztof B. in line with Polish privacy laws.
Krzysztof B., 46, has denied the charges of multiple counts of rape, illegally holding his daughter captive and five other more minor crimes. He told authorities that he had sex with his daughter, but insisted that is was consensual. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
The daughter, Alicja B., has also alleged that the suspect fathered two children with her that were put up for adoption.
Prosecutors have tracked down two children that Alicja gave birth to, but say they have not conducted DNA tests on the children to determine whether Krzysztof fathered them.
The story bears similarities to that of Josef Fritzl, the Austrian man who was convicted on Thursday of homicide, incest, rape and imprisoning his daughter for 24 years. The parallels between the cases led the Polish tabloid Fakt to dub Krzysztof B. the "Polish Fritzl" on its front page yesterday.
In the interview published by Fakt, Alicja B. said she hates her father and he "doesn't even deserve to be called a father."
"I wish him death, for what he did to me, for wasting my life," she was quoted as saying. "He made me believe that in every family the father sleeps with his daughters. He said that's how a daughter is prepared for life with men."
Court spokesman Antoni Tokarzewski said Alicja B. and her mother, Teresa, were present for the proceedings and are expected to testify during the closed-door trial. It was not immediately clear how long the trial would last.
Police detained Krzysztof B. in September in the eastern town of Siedlce after his wife and daughter came forward. His wife has said her husband used to order her to watch television whenever he went into his daughter's room. She said the man beat her and her daughter when they asked that he stop the abuse.
