POLLINGS stations opened across France today for the final round of a tense presidential election battle between incumbent right-winger Nicolas Sarkozy and Socialist challenger Francois Hollande.

More than 43 million French citizens in Europe were eligible to vote in the run-off, which began yesterday in the country's overseas territories and was due to close at 8pm (1800 GMT), when preliminary results are announced.
