Portugal's workers rally against IMF intervention
TENS of thousands of Portuguese held two large rallies in Lisbon yesterday, protesting against what they called the intervention in their country by the International Monetary Fund.
The General Confederation of Portuguese Workers and General Workers Union rallied in Lisbon separately amid the economic crisis in Portugal, which has requested IMF's financial aid to avoid bankruptcy.
Manuel Carvalho da Silva, secretary-general of the left-wing trade union federation CGTP, announced another two rallies to be held against the IMF measures that will cut social expenses.
"We invite the workers, the youngsters, and the retired people for the rallies that we organize against these measures they want to impose on us," he said.
The rallies will be held in Lisbon and Oporto on May 18, three days after the IMF reveals the conditions for the Portuguese bailout.
Joao Proenca, leader of the center-right and center-left trade union federation UGT, said they would not accept a deal at any price that "required further sacrifice from the Portuguese workers."
Held just 35 days before general elections, this year's May Day parades reflected the campaign climate in the country.
"We need a majority government, with open commitments about what it is going to do in the economy," Proenca said.
