Power outage across Bangladesh as national grid collapses

Power outage has hit several places in Bangladesh, including capital Dhaka, due to a collapse in the national grid on Saturday.

Reports of power cut were coming in from several places including Narayanganj, Rangpur, Sirajganj and Sylhet on Saturday when the Bangladesh-India power interconnection line at Bheramara in Kushtia tripped.

State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid told local media "The national grid has collapsed. We are working on it. Power is back on in some places already. It might take an hour to restore power supply."

The sudden vacuum caused disruption of power generation at all power plants across the country.

The production at the nine units of the Ashuganj Power Plant, the second largest in the country, has also stopped due to the national grid collapse.

Some power plants resumed generation at around 1:00 p.m..

The authorities of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport are continuing operation through a powerful generator, said public relation officer of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh.  "In case of emergency, the generator can give us back up for one to two days more," the PRO said.

Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, the country's largest public hospital, are using standby generator to run the hospital.
