Powerful quake jolts northeastern Japan

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter Scale hit Japan's northeastern region this morning, said the Japan Meteorological Agency, which issued a tsunami warning.

The focus of the quake, which occurred at around 11:45 am (0245 GMT), was located 10 km under the sea east of Miyagi Prefecture, said the agency.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to properties.

Tohoku Electric Power said its Onagawa nuclear plant was operating normally after the quake. Tokyo Electric Power also said there was no impact on its power plants in the region.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas. The country accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.
