'Precious' star Mo'Nique wins early Golden Globe
MO'NIQUE won a Golden Globe Award for best supporting film actress, going against her reputation as a comedienne and playing an abusive mother in dark drama "Precious," as the glitzy Hollywood honors kicked off yesterday.
Toni Collette was named best actress in a television comedy or musical in her program "The United States of Tara", while host Ricky Gervais set the audience of top stars like George Clooney and Sandra Bullock laughing.
"First let me say, thank you God for this amazing ride that you're allowing me to go on," said Mo'Nique, star of "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire."
"I'm shaking, but I tell you all, I am in the midst of my dream."
The Golden Globe Awards are given out by some 90 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to film and television actors, directors and others, and a win here can give movies the momentum they need in Hollywood's race for Oscars, the world's top movie honors given out in March.
The ceremony is seen by tens of millions of viewers around the world, and can help propel TV winners to wider audiences. And the fashion choices of the stars on the glamorous red carpet can give designers the exposure they need to take their clothes to catwalks worldwide.
Many stars pinned ribbons of yellow, blue and red to their dresses and tuxedos in a show of support for victims of the massive earthquake that shattered Haiti last week.
Fashion choices consisted of the usual black, but also deep and rich colors. Double nominee Bullock chose deep purple.
GERVAIS JOKES
The show airs on U.S. TV network NBC, and this year Gervais had been hired as host to bring his off-the-cuff and often controversial humor to Sunday's show. He did not disappoint with some off-color remarks about his genitals.
Heading into Sunday's telecast, NBC's contract-ending talks with late-night host Conan O'Brien, over being replaced on "The Tonight Show" by Jay Leno, were expected to be a big topic. And after his opening monologue, Gervais joked, "Let's get on with it before NBC replaces me with Jay Leno."
While television awards grab a major share of the spotlight at the Golden Globes, the film races take on greater importance because of their impact on the Oscars.
Among nominees for best film drama, the top award given out later in the night, Iraq war film "The Hurt Locker," which on Friday was named best film by US broadcast critics, will compete against director James Cameron's box office smash, action-adventure "Avatar."
Joining them in the best film drama race are Clooney's corporate downsizing movie "Up In the Air," dark tale of abuse "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" and Quentin Tarantino's World War Two fantasy "Inglourious Basterds."
In the category for best movie musical or comedy, box office sensation "The Hangover" is competing against culinary movie "Julie and Julia," relationship film "It's Complicated," the musical "Nine" and love story "(500) Days of Summer."
Streep ("It's Complicated" and "Julie & Julia") and Bullock ("The Proposal") will square off for best actress in a comedy, and Bullock has a second chance to win in the category for best actress in a drama with football film "The Blind Side."
