Pro-Brexit campaign is winning cash battle
GROUPS campaigning for Britain to leave the EU have raised 8.2 million pounds (US$12 million), more than the rival “In” campaign, a watchdog said yesterday, publishing figures that showed the role of big business in the battle.
Campaigns from both sides of the debate have courted money from business to fight a referendum on June 23, a decision that will not only help determine Britain’s future in trade and world affairs but also shape the future of the 28-member bloc.
Groups aiming to keep Britain in the EU raised 7.5 million pounds, the Electoral Commission said.
The independent watchdog looked at donations from February 1 until April 21 and said that Leave.EU, which is not the official lead campaign for a British exit, or Brexit, had been boosted by one donation from a founder of investment firm Hargreaves Lansdown.
Peter Hargreaves, a billionaire entrepreneur who called the EU “wasteful,” had donated 3.2 million pounds.
Those in the official “In” campaign — Britain Stronger in Europe — were boosted by two donations worth more than 2 million pounds by its leading contributor David Sainsbury, the former chairman of the supermarket chain Sainsbury’s.
