Queen to become great-grandmother in December

BRITAIN'S Queen Elizabeth is to become a great-grandmother for the first time later this year, Buckingham Palace said.

Princess Anne's oldest son Peter Phillips, who is eleventh in line to the throne, and his Canadian wife Autumn are expecting their first child in December.

"The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh as well as Autumn's family have been informed and are delighted with the news," Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

Phillips, 32, was the first, and so far only, grandchild of the Queen to marry despite constant media speculation about some of her other grandchildren Prince Harry, Prince William and Phillips' sister, sportswoman Zara.

The couple, who courted controversy by selling the rights to their wedding to Hello! magazine for a reported 500,000 pounds, live in Hong Kong, where he works for the Royal Bank of Scotland.
