Rain triggers fatal slides
POWERFUL landslides triggered by heavy rain killed more than 40 people in southeastern Bangladesh yesterday, striking a coastal area as people slept.
As rain continued to pour, officials feared the toll could rise. At least three soldiers were missing from their camp and chunks of mud destroyed thatched village homes.
The mudslides struck early yesterday in two areas in Cox's Bazar - 296 kilometers south of the capital, Dhaka, a hilly and forested region near the border with Myanmar.
Video footage showed rescuers, mostly villagers, removing mud from buried homes. Rain hampered rescue efforts with many roads inundated.
Firefighters and soldiers were using cranes and hoses to clear debris from a makeshift military camp in the Ramu area that was hit by a landslide, said a local photographer.
He saw three bodies and heard an army official saying three soldiers were still buried.
A government official said 19 bodies were recovered from landslides at Ukhia and Teknaf in Cox's Bazar. Many were buried alive as they slept, he said. Later, it was confirmed that another 20 bodies were retrieved in the Teknaf area.
The heavy rainfall was caused by a depression in the Bay of Bengal.
