Rebel commander surrender to Army in Philippines

A SENIOR field commander of Muslim rebels in the southern Philippines linked with series of attacks on Christian communities surrendered to the government yesterday, a military official said.

Mustafah Alumay, also known as Joker and Tik 4, who was part of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) guerillas that stormed villages and slaughtered helpless civilians in 2008, voluntarily surrendered to the government, said Lieutenant Colonel Ferdinand Razalan, a local Army commander.

"He (Alumay) promised to help as witness in the murder charges against his colleagues but we will study his offer," Razalan said, adding Alumay yielded two Garand rifles, an M16 Armalite rifle and a high-power pistol.

Abdullah Macapaar, Alumay' superior, led deadly attacks in 2008 killing 60 civilians following the aborted signing of peace deal that would have given them their own homeland in the southern Philippine region of Mindanao.

The attacks prompted government to suspend peace talks with the MILF and ordered a massive assault after Kato and Bravo. The fighting has affected more than 600,000 people.

Peace talks between the government and the MILF collapsed in August, 2008 after the two sides failed to sign a territory agreement as scheduled.

Talks between Manila and MILF are expected to resume next month in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Philippine President Benigno Aquino III has said the government is willing to resume talks with MILF after Ramadan.
