Red alert declared in Ecuador amid volcanic activity

RED alert was declared today in 16 localities near Tungurahua Volcano in central Ecuador amid increased volcanic activity.

This volcano, active since 2006, registered a "very fast and sustained" increase of its seismic activity in the morning with explosion of volcanic material and ashes emissions which made the ground to vibrate, according to Ecuadorian Geophysics Institute Director Hugo Yepez.

"It was an earthquake in the round and noise when the volcanic material came out," Yepez said, adding that the volcano is also producing incandescent material, which has moved 1.5 kilometers from the crater.

"The volcano continues with an open system of explosions and there is the possibility of this to continue for many hours more," he said.

The towns where red alert are declared include Juive Grande, Juive Chico, Bilbao, Chontapamba, El Manzano, Choglontus, Cusua, Puela, Chacauco, El Altar and two more localities in the riverside of Vascun and Ulba Rivers of Banos resort.

According to the authorities, these towns have been affected for the volcanic ashes, while Banos reports lava in its near by, which made the authorities to close the pass of vehicles in Ambato-Banos road.

The Risk Management Secretariat said as a preventive measure the inhabitants of some localities near to the volcano, were evacuated and taken to shelters.

Assistant Secretary of Risk Management Felipe Bazan said that 95 percent of the people living near the volcano was evacuated and added that his secretariat opened nine shelters with place form 1,500 people.

Last week, the 5,200-meter-high Tungurahua Volcano registered a "sudden explosion" which caused alert on its activity.
