Rescue hero rejects offer of burgers
THE man who famously put aside his McDonald's hamburger to help rescue three women held captive in an Ohio house said on Friday that he's not endorsing restaurants offering him free burgers for life and wants his name kept out of it.
Charles Ramsey was hailed a hero after helping Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight break out of the Cleveland house May 6. Homeowner Ariel Castro faces charges.
Ramsey had noted in an interview with a local TV station that he was eating McDonald's when the scene unfolded.
The restaurant where Ramsey worked as a dishwasher created a Ramsey Burger, then more than a dozen area eateries decided a larger tribute was due.
But Ramsey said he doesn't endorse the restaurants offering burgers bearing the Ramsey name, or promoting a lifetime of free burgers for him.
"I never told these people they could use my name for this," Ramsey said in a statement.
