Rose Parade held in chilly weather

Thousands of spectators who lined up the traditional Rose Parade route along the Colorado Boulevard in US western city of Pasadena in Los Angeles County, California, on Thursday bundled in warmth keeping blankets, hats, gloves and drank hot beverages as a cold snap hit the US West Coast and the weather on the New Year's Day turned out to be very cold.

The dawn temperature in Pasadena was less than three degrees Celsius Thursday, but it was not cold enough to break the 195 record of zero degree Celsius, according to local weather service.

The 126th Rose Parade began at 8 a.m. local time, featuring the theme of "Inspiring Stories." The two-hour event attracted 39 floats decorated with fresh-cut flowers highlighting historic figures, celebrities and popular culture, along with 20 marching bands and riders in 16 equestrian formations.

The marching bands included those from Denmark, Japan and Mexico. Ebola was featured Thursday's Rose Parade, as the AIDS Healthcare Foundation sent a float to honor doctors and nurses who have gone to Africa to help Ebola victims. Local Chinese Americans took part in the festive parade with a float entitled "A Bright Future," featuring a flying phoenix which is said to depict a legendary firebird soaring again from ashes.

The event also featured a riderless horse that represented grand marshal Louis Zamperini, a World War II hero and former Olympian, who died in July. Zamperini is the subject of the Angelina Jolie-directed movie "Unbroken," which is now shown in theaters. Zamperini's family members, including his son and daughter rode in a car in his place.
