Russia accuses West of inciting opposition
Russia yesterday accused the West of inciting the Syrian opposition after the bomb attack which killed the defense minister and President Bashar Assad's brother-in-law, arguing that a proposed UN resolution amounted to support for the rebels.
Russia is at odds with the US and its European allies ahead of the vote which was to have taken place yesterday on a resolution that would impose sanctions on Syria.
"Instead of calming the opposition down, some of our partners are inciting it to go on," Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was quoted as saying by the RIA Novosti news agency.
Supporting the Syrian opposition "is a dead-end policy, because Assad is not leaving voluntarily," he said.
