Russian cargo plane crash kills 11
A CARGO plane crashed in Russia's far-eastern Kolyma region yesterday, killing 11 people, after its engine failed, according to news agency Interfax.
The Antonov-12, which was delivering food to the far-flung region of Chukotka, caught fire and requested an emergency landing at the city of Magadan soon after take-off.
"(The plane was carrying) nine crew members and two passengers, as well as 16 tons of food," according to a statement on the Russian prosecutor's website. Interfax said the office claimed all those on board died.
A search and rescue team was sent out early yesterday to find the craft.
The crash is the latest in a string of transport accidents that have prompted Russia's leaders to condemn the country's dilapidated infrastructure and endemic corner-cutting on safety ahead of parliamentary elections in December and a presidential poll next March.
The Antonov-12 was leased to private airline company Avis-Amur. The prosecutor's office said the company was being investigated on the basis that safety violations may have contributed to the accident.
Avis-Amur was not available for comment.
