Russian police kill two gunmen in Ingushetia
TWO suspected militants were killed in a gunbattle with police in Nazran, the largest city of Russia's North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia, local media reported yesterday.
Citing a source with the local law enforcement, the reports said a shootout started after police attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle.
"As a result of the exchange of fire, two attackers were killed, " the Interfax news agency quoted the source as saying.
However, no further information was released to the public. The reports said police officers were trying to identify the suspects.
Violence is common in Russia's North Caucasus republics of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, with militants frequently mounting attacks against police officers and authorities.
Moscow has vowed to bring stability to the region by improving social services, raising pensions and salaries, and tackling corruption and terror infiltration.
