Russia storms Belbek airbase, at least 1 injured
RUSSIAN forces have consolidated their control over Crimea, with two more military bases now in their hands.
Yesterday, Russian troops stormed the Belbek airbase near the port city of Sevastopol, where around 300 Ukrainian soldiers are stationed. The move followed the expiration of an ultimatum by the Russians to surrender.
The troops smashed through concrete walls with armored vehicles, and gunshots and explosions were heard at the base. At least one Ukrainian has been reported injured. The Ukrainian commander of the airbase said he had ordered his men not to resist and turn over their weapons, to avoid casualties.
Also yesterday, a naval base at Novo-fedorivka, some 50 kilometres west of Simferopol, was stormed by pro-Russian protesters. Ukrainian forces abandoned the base, which was then occupied by Russian troops. The two military facilities were among the last holdouts of the Ukrainian military in the peninsula.
