S Korea briefs envoys on deadly ship sinking
THE South Korean government briefed envoys of China, Russia and Japan, neighboring countries involved in multinational talks aimed at ending nuclear programs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), on the deadly sinking of its warship in late March, local media reported today.
The government has explained the presumed cause of the fatal sinking of the 1,200-ton warship Cheonan on March 26 to Seoul-based ambassadors from China, Russia and Japan, separately, the Yonhap News Agency said citing an unidentified official.
Seoul is also inviting envoys of other countries, including Britain and France, to the foreign ministry in order to brief them on the outcome of the investigations into the mysterious naval incident before it unveils the result on Thursday, Yonhap said.
The move to seek international consent on dealing with the incident comes as suspicions are deepening over the DPRK's hand in the incident, which killed scores of South Korean navy sailors near a tense border between the two warring Koreas.
Despite Pyongyang's denial of any responsibility, it has been widely believed all along that the DPRK, South Korea's wartime rival, might have torpedoed Cheonan.
