S. Korean officials to visit Libya as 3 workers injured
SOUTH Korea would soon send a team of officials to Libya as the wave of mass anti-government protest there continues, the foreign ministry in Seoul said today.
It has been confirmed as of today that three South Koreans at a construction site in Libya's capital city of Tripoli were injured in a riot. In a separate case, a South Korean company in northern Libya was robbed of computers, vehicles and other equipment, according to the ministry.
As situation in the Arab nation got more serious with anti-government rallies spreading nationwide, the South Korea foreign ministry said it would send its ambassador to Libya, currently in Seoul for a conference, back to Libya and dispatch a group of officials there to help protect South Korean nationals.
The government would hold a meeting later in the day to assess the ongoing situation in Libya and discuss possible responses, the ministry added. The presidential office Cheong Wa Dae, the National Intelligence Service, the Prime Minister's Office, the Foreign Ministry and the Land Ministry will also join the meeting.
The ministry yesterday raised the travel alert level for South Korean travelers to Liya, asking them to cancel or postpone planned trips.
Some 1,000 South Koreans are currently in Libya to work on construction sites.
